James Dawson started out with a strong interest in design, working in land surveying then as time progressed his interests moved towards environmental issues. Design landscape seemed to be the obvious thing. He then went on to complete his Landscape Design degree at Melbourne University. James is a designer in our Design Team at Normark and has been for many years.
What he enjoys most about landscape designing is working with people and creating something beautiful and positive for the world. One of his favourite jobs was the 2010 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show where he designed a garden for Guide Dogs Victoria. “I learnt so much from people who are vision impaired and took great joy in creating something that they loved.”
James believes the most challenging aspect of being a landscape designer is getting people to understand the value of a good design. It is such a vital aspect of the process that it can’t be overlooked especially not on the grounds of costs as a professional designer can work within your budget and with their expertise can end up saving the client money.
When it comes to giving advice to people considering getting a landscape design, James says to “keep an open mind. Also to give as much input to your designer as possible. I want 100% input from my clients as I am there to guide them and offer advice. Together we can create their dream landscape.”
